Review: Storm Sentinel

Storm Sentinel
Review by:  vehoae
Author:  Tony LoPresti

Illustrator: Jeanne Conway

Tornadoes can occur most anywhere, but in America the region known as tornado alley (from Northern Texas straight up through eastern South Dakota) gets the most attention - along with the State of Alabama.

Since we’re now into the normal season for tornadoes, April to June, this is an important time to speak about them with children. Storm Sentinel by Tony LoPresti is an excellent assist for educators and parents when talking with children. The story is told from the perspective of an animated tornado siren named Fred. The book also includes sections to answer many questions about the characteristics and incredible strength of tornadoes.

I was pleased to see that LoPresti wrote the story to address not just preparation for and duration of the storm, but also addressed the aftermath of one particular tornado in a gentle manner appropriate for young children. This excellent book certainly deserves a place on all bookshelves.

Book Prepares Children for Storms

Storm season has arrived, and so has a book by Tony LoPresti that will help prepare children for the serious storm, a tornado: Storm Sentinel. Illustrations by Jeanne Conway help make a normally frightening subject less scary as Fred tells his story:

Hi! My name is Fred. I am a tornado siren. Oh, you don’t know what a tornado siren is? My friends and I watch over people. We let them know when a tornado might be coming. When you open the pages of this book and read my story, you will learn I am a Storm Sentinel.

Another award for a 4RV book

posted by Vivian Zabel

I received an email from Tony LoPresti, who felt sad because other 4RV books received awards, but not his. Wednesday, his sadness turned to smiles, well, maybe to cheers.

My Cat by Tony LoPresti, illustrated by Deborah C. Johnson, received a Certificate of Excellence from Cat Writer's Association in Books for Children category. It is now a finalist for the CWA Muse Medallion and is up for two special awards which will be announced at the CWA Awards Banquet November 3 in L.A.

Wonder who plans on a trip to Los Angeles in three and a half weeks?

Congratulations, Tony and Deb. Welcome to the lists of award winners from 4RV Publishing. We are proud of you.

Note: My Cat and other 4RV books are now on sale. See the 4RV Bookstore.
