Sometimes I'll have a theme, a very vague/general one, when I begin, but usually I have a story and discover it does have a theme. My WIP, a historical novel, has a theme of evil destroying a nation and families. I'm 2/3 finished and discover the theme transcends history and applies to today. Scary.
